What it covers

The course covers responsibility for the content and direction of a product. On the subject side it covers Lean-AI fundamentals, OKRs, and requirements work and product design. Added to that is the role work itself: formulating and defending a product vision, owning a backlog, facilitating an OKR workshop, setting up a review so that product feedback emerges, and managing stakeholder expectations.

Why take this course

The role is often described through artefacts and rarely through what makes it difficult: refusing with reasons, defending a vision against differing expectations, and staffing a review so that a signal emerges. In addition, content and architecture responsibility sit with the same person in many organisations.

What you can do afterwards

  • Assign the three responsibilities of value, flow and architecture within your own team and name the gaps.
  • Formulate a product vision that can exclude requirements, and defend it against objection.
  • Own a backlog: refuse with reasons, maintain order, set responsibilities for changes.
  • Facilitate an OKR workshop and support a cascade from portfolio to team level.
  • Set up and facilitate a review that produces product feedback, and justify who has to be present.
  • Make conflicting stakeholder expectations ready for decision.

Who this course is for

Primary

Product owners and product leads. Anyone who owns a backlog and answers for what gets built.

Also a fit

Anyone who wants to take on this role or is growing into it. Business analysts and business representatives with product responsibility. Project leads moving into a product role. Leaders who manage value owners.

Learning objectives in detail

  1. 1 Assign the three VFA responsibilities in their own team and name where they are unfilled or improperly combined.
  2. 2 Formulate a product vision that can exclude requirements and defend it against objection.
  3. 3 Own a backlog: refuse with reasons, maintain order, set responsibilities for changes.
  4. 4 Facilitate an OKR workshop, including the typical dead ends.
  5. 5 Facilitate an OKR cascade from portfolio to team level without it turning into goal assignment.
  6. 6 Set up and facilitate a review so that it produces product feedback, and justify who has to be present.
  7. 7 Make stakeholder conflicts ready for decision rather than deferring them.
